How Does IPL Work?
Your IPL technician uses one of the most advanced hair removal and skin rejuvenation system available.
During your IPL treatment, your technician will use a hand-held wand to deliver a dose of broad-spectrum light to your skin. The light travels through the skin to the root of each hair – where the highest concentration of melanin resides. As the light heats the melanin, the root is vaporised and the hair falls out.
The heat produced during IPL treatment destroys the papilla, which produces the hair. This results in permanent hair reduction.
What Can I Expect from my IPL Treatment?
Depending on the area you’re targeting, your IPL treatment could last between 10 secs (Upper Lip) – 60 minutes. After two weeks, you’ll see most of the hair has fallen out.
However, four weeks after your initial treatment, you’ll see some hair growing back – this is normal, as these are hairs at a later stage of growth.
Most people will require multiple treatments to effectively remove hair, over a period of 6-8 months. At your initial consultation, we’ll lay out a treatment plan tailored to your individual skin.
How Do I Care for My Skin After IPL?
For six weeks after IPL treatment, keep your skin out of sunlight, as sun exposure can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
Is IPL Painful?
IPL is distinctly less painful than many other beauty treatments, such as waxing, where hair is ripped out from the roots. Some of our clients describe is as a “snapping” sensation, like “being flicked with a rubber band”.
If you’re worried, you can take a dose of paracetamol tablets 30 minutes prior to your IPL treatment.
How is IPL Different From Electrolysis?
Many people confuse IPL with Electrolysis or laser hair removal. These treatments are quite similar, but have distinct differences.
Electrolysis works by inserting a tiny needle into each hair follicle and passing a small amount of energy through the hair, which creates a chemical reaction in that destroys the hair cells and prevents them growing back.
Laser treatment uses a single wavelength of light in a straight beam to treat hair and veins. Laser treatments works best on darker skin and on leg veins.
In contrast, IPL uses multiple wavelengths in a scattered beam to destroy the cells at the base of each hair, preventing further growth. IPL is the least painful of all hair-removal treatments, and ideal for lighter-coloured skin.
